“The Death of Ivan Ilich” as a Case Study for the Creation of Open Language Learning Materials
Prof. Jahn partnered with the University of Minnesota Libraries Publishing team to create the open textbook, "The Death of Ivan Ilich": An Electronic Study Edition of the Russian Text. Prof. Jahn conceived this electronic textbook to be openly accessible and available to students of Russian language and literature around the world. This textbook combines Public Domain material with original content produced by Prof. Jahn that is openly licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial license. Prof. Jahn has taken these Public Domain works and presented them in a variety of electronic formats for the benefit of Russian language learners. The UMN Libraries Publishing team formatted the textbook within the commonly-used Pressbooks tool so that the original text and English translations can be presented side by side with annotations throughout. The Pressbooks glossary tool was repurposed so that readers can click Russian language text to see a more literal English translation of each Russian phrase. The presenters will share their experience remixing Public Domain content to create an online, open access language learning textbook in Pressbooks and will answer audience questions about the content and the process.
